Strength training isn't just something I do for an hour a day at the gym, it defines who I am. I started training with weights in high school to get stronger for wrestling. I made many mistakes and learned a lot of lessons along the way. A few years ago I switched my training style from a 5 day/week bodypart split routine, to a 3 day/week strength routine. I also entered my first strongman contest. I came in dead last in that contest, but I was hooked. I found a few guys with all the strongman implements and began training events with them. The next contest I entered, I won. I now find myself thinking about training many times throughout the day. As the work day winds down, I get increasingly anxious to get to the gym. There is something about lifting heavy things that just makes me feel good.
I've been following Wendler's 5/3/1 and making very good progress on it. It's simple to set up, and I choose accessory lifts to aid in strongman events. I train gym lifts 3days/week, and typically get a 4th day of events training. The events training is very important because you want to be familiar with the implements. I also think it's very important to have a log book and set a new PR in something every time you train.
